On the topic of blood, the bright and unusually colorful life juice in all of us, I often find myself marveling at its design. Its protein makeup makes it difficult to remove. It stains and persists. When cut or punctured, it oozes out extravagantly, a red flag signaling immediate attention. It refuses to be ignored. It arrives bright red, becomes an alizarin crime scene, and dies into ox blood, burgundy then black. When fresh, it smells and tastes metallic with its high iron content, then putrefies into a rotten smell that can travel distance better than any perfume.
This oil painting is titled “All Bleeding Eventually Stops” after the morbidly humorous quote occasionally shared in the operating room. The bleeding being resolved by successful cautery or eventual death. This piece was intended to be a symbolic line in the sand ending an era of my life. I’m not sure when the bleeding will stop but there’s comfort in knowing it eventually will.
